The philosophy behind Sunshine State Companion Care began with an incredibly special client—and a belief that every person deserves support shaped around who they are.
Where it began
Care for Ruth was deeply personal.
Our commitment to exceptional, personalized care began with an incredibly special first client: Ruth Posselt Burgin, the celebrated violinist and wife of Richard Burgin. They first met in 1923 at the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Ruth was among the select musicians entrusted with the use of a Stradivarius violin. That distinction reflected both her extraordinary artistry and the importance of protecting the instruments, collections, and personal belongings entrusted to her care.
That experience taught us that the things a person keeps at home can hold tremendous financial, historical, and sentimental value. Respectful support means caring for the whole person—and honoring the home and history that surround them.
What Ruth taught us
Thoughtful care lives in the details.
Caring for Ruth was often filled with memorable moments. We remember her looking up with her hair beautifully styled and her pink lipstick perfectly applied, then asking, “Do you know who I am?” At times, she would motion as though playing the violin, offering a glimpse of the musician she had always been.
She also shared her preferences in simple, familiar ways—such as asking for cream cheese on toast or cream cheese with peaches. Those moments reminded us that personalized care is found not only in meeting practical needs, but also in recognizing and honoring each person’s identity, history, preferences, and dignity.
